With the conclusion of Batman: Year One and the departure of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli the plan had been to bring in writer Max Allen Collins to take over the main title. Though his run is best remembered for the death of Jason Todd in the A Death in the Family storyline, the issues leading up to it were great as well as Starlin picked up where Miller left off by writing a hard-boiled Batman who, despite the Gotham he operated in becoming a little darker and violent, was still portrayed as a hero. Like a lot of the great stories during this period Starlin was able to produce iconic moments backed by solid storytelling. Riding the wave of momentum at the time and also making its own contribution to the success was Jim Starlin’s 17 issues on Batman. With classic stories like Year One and The Killing Joke Batman was being redefined for a new generation and the character’s popularity was reaching unseen heights. The late 80s were a great time in comics for the Dark Knight. Throughout the novel there is an intense tug and pull between the two. The novel perfectly captures that ennui of two friends close to saying goodbye to childhood and each other and their desire to also charge forth and grow older and mature. Marco and Stephen are just at the tipping point and the grand Heist in this novel is their last hurrah before life takes them in different directions. Moskowitz has captured that awkward balance between child and teenager. Marco and Stephen are so effortlessly charming and wonderfully fun. Marco Impossible is one of those books that will make you laugh, laugh some more, fall in love with all the characters and float around buzzing afterwards. “Don’t know! Seemed like fun to make you give up on humanity and despair for the world!” But is it going to be something happy? Something heart-wrenchingly sad? Both? Is she just going to straight up gut you and leave your innards lying on the floor at your feet while you hollowly ask, “Why, Hannah? WHY!?” You just never know what you’re going to get with a Hannah Moskowitz novel. Lindstrom is of Anishinaabe /Métis descent and is tribally enrolled with the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe. We Are Water Protectors includes essential notes from Lindstrom and Goade, as well as a glossary and further reading. This ominous, frightening threat is followed by my favorite illustration in the book, and possibly one of my favorite picture book illustrations ever (below). Wreck everything in its path," and Goade expands on these words with illustrations of a snake/oil pipeline hybrid with a fiery tongue and a haze of pollution surrounding it. Water is sacred, she said." The narrator recounts the Anishinaabe prophecy that warns of a "black snake that will destroy the land. It nourished us inside our mother's body. Through the voice of her narrator, Lindstrom introduces readers to the ancestry, inheritance and communal responsibility of Native Nations, starting with these words, "Water is the first medicine, Nokomis told me. It is also a work that is powerfully poetic and straightforward in its message and richly layered and complex for readers ready to dive deeper. We Are Water Protectors is a stunning picture book that and a call to action. Reviewing it again to recommend it here, it has aged well. Using experiences from her own life, Kristen presents terms and concepts in alphabetical order: from absentee parenthood to musical beds to Zuzu’s petals phenomenon – you’ll have to read the book to find out what this is. This book perfectly captures the joys and frustrations of working motherhood. I was in it up to my eyebrows, working from home (more than full-time most days) and hearing questions like, “Why aren’t you more involved in the PTA?” from people who hardly knew me. When I received her first book, Just Let Me Lie Down: Necessary Terms for the Half-Insane Working Mom, as a gift in 2010, my kids were ten, twelve, and fourteen. I first noticed Kristin when she was the editor of Real Simple and immediately fell in love with her personal and powerful writing. She calls the youngest her mid-life crisis baby – she had him at age forty-three – ten years and two miscarriages after her first two boys were born. Kristin van Ogtrop has raised three sons in the suburbs while working high-powered jobs in publishing over the past twenty years. Relatable, funny, and easy to read – Kristin van Ogtrop’s essay collections should be on every mom’s bookshelf (and/or Kindle). Gideon Clifford Jeffrey Davidson Haigh (born 29 December 1965) is an English-born Australian journalist, who writes about sport (especially cricket) and business. One day, you might be asked what cricket in the time of Warne was like. The result is one of the finest cricket books ever written, a whole new way of looking at its subject, at sport, and at Australia. Drawing on interviews conducted with Warne over the course of a decade, and two decades of watching him play, Haigh assesses this greatest of sportsmen as cricketer, character, comrade, newsmaker and national figure – a natural in an increasingly regimented time, a simplifier in a growingly complicated world. In On Warne, he relives the era's highs, its lows, its fun and its follies. Now that the Australian cricketer who dominated airwaves and headlines for twenty years has turned full-time celebrity and media event, his sporting conquests and controversies are receding steadily into the past.īut what was it like to watch Warne at his long peak, the man of a thousand international wickets, the incarnation of Australian audacity and cheek? Our leading cricket writer, Gideon Haigh, lived and loved the Warne era, when the impossible was everyday, and the sensational every other day. The resulting masterpiece is as much about our fascination with Warnie as it is about the player himself. Gideon Haigh on Shane Warne is an irresistible pairing: 'the finest cricket writer alive' ( The Australian) on the greatest cricketer of our times. |
